The Origin of the Rhode Island Red

Rhode Island Reds originated from Rhode Island in America,  Initially Rhode Island Reds were rose combed and were first exhibited in 1880 in South Massachusetts.  The Single comb Rhode Island was not recognised in America until 1904.  The British Rhode Island Red Club formed in 1909.

Rhode Island Reds

RIRs are classed as heavy soft feather bantam, their body shape is often described as being brick shape.

RIRs are a popular easy going useful and independant bird with a shiny rich chocolate red feathering, they are excellent layers of pale brown eggs.  These birds have really grown on us they are becoming more friendly and are reliable egg layers.  We have also noticed they are a breed that doesn't go broody at the drop of a hat.
